15 Fun ways to keep Kids cool Outdoors this Summer

Whoa!!! It’s shaping up to be a scorcher of a Summer this year so far this year isn’t it?!!. I thought I’d share with you 15 of the best fun ways to keep the family cool Outdoors this Summer and hopefully add a little entertainment and bonus Mummy points into the mix while we’re at it.

At the time of writing this we have just had one of the hottest days on record with some places in the UK hitting over 40 degrees Celsius. That is HOT by any standard. In the UK hot weather is not frequent, it’s occasional and because of this We don’t have air conditioning !!!

We also have to make the ruddy most of it because it’s not likely to happen again for a while. It sends us all into holiday mode, but while we are out making the most of it we need to keep cool.

Outdoor Activities

Water Battle

We love a good Water Battle ! Grab your water guns, water pistols, spray bottles and water balloons and let the battle commence!!!

Ice Block Treasure Hunt

This is so simple yet loads of fun and super cooling on hot days. Simply add small toys suitable for freezing to a tub of water and freeze. Once frozen, head outdoors and begin excavating. We use a baster by squirting water to excavate.

Sensory Walk

Fill containers that the children can stand in such as washing bowl and margarine tubs with various fillings such as slime, water with bubbles, food colouring and bubble wrap with water and they have to walk through for prize

Frozen Dinosaur Egg Treasure Hunt

Freeze your toy dinosaur in balloons and add water so to get egg shape. Once frozen make a treasure hunt in the garden with the frozen dino eggs.

Make an Ice Castle

This was suggested to me recently and I had never thought of it before but its so much fun and most importantly cooling in the heat. Freeze various containers, tubs , ice cube trays and beakers with water ( you can add food colouring if you like) Once frozen transfer the blocks outdoors and build an Ice castle.

Water Paint

Grab a jug, A clean paint brush and paint with water. So simple but Kids love this and once it dries , it’s gone !

Paddling Pool Fun

We all know this one but it doesn’t get more fun than getting the paddling pool out to dip in and out of.

Make Home made Ice lollies

You can buy Ice lolly molds very cheaply using fruit juice, yogurt, smoothies. You can also add berries for an extra treat.

Paddling

If you can head to a stream, pond or sea , get that footwear off and paddle. Again simple but such fun, even more so if you take a fishing net.

Water Limbo

Hold the water pipe and you have to limbo dance under the water. Simple but hilarious.

Pass the Water

When there are several to entertain this ones so easy yet so much fun in the heat. Simply line everyone up in single file. the children hold a cup on their head and the aim is for the one at the front to pass the water backwards and (hopefully) get it into the one behinds cup!

Ice Bowling

This is so easy but so much fun. Fill 10 bottles with water and food colouring. Then fill a couple of balloons with water and freeze. Once the balloon is frozen, remove the balloon so you are left with an ice ball and play bowling outdoors.

Frozen Sensory Bags

Get some large zip lock bags and fill half with water. You can add different combinations to each bag. For example food colouring, glitter to some, slime in another, small toys and freeze. Once frozen you can chat about how they think they will feel when not frozen , float on water, and play with once they soften.

Find Hacks

There are so many Summer hacks out there my favourite so far this year is to keep a damp face cloth or wet wipes in the fridge to freshen up.

Ice Cube Water Play

This is so easy to set up. Freeze lots of ice cubes. You can add food colouring and glitter or even dinosaurs. Then get two large containers and fill one with water, one with food colouring if you like. Get a large spoon and then encourage your child to transfer one to the other. This is fab for hand to eye coordination and motor skills.

Let me know if you tried and enjoy any of these and if you have any Summer hacks to keep cool this Summer let me know in the comments below.

Have a fantastic Summer

Ugh! I totally need these tips. We also like to use the “water bucket” … we sit underneath a tree with water (and ice) inside of a tidy cat bucket (you can also buy one of those orange buckets from Home Depot too)!

That’s pretty smart to have them paint with water. I never thought to do that, and I have four kids!

It was sooooo hot 2 weeks ago when we went away but we went to Scotland so the rain and cold wasn’t far away. I can’t handle the hot weather but it is nice to be back home where the termperatre is a bit higher. Great tips, needed them last year for the weeks of heatwave we had! Thanks for linking up with #stayclassymama
